What To Expect

  • Therapy sessions begin with a comprehensive interview to understand the individual's life events that have contributed to their inability to cope in a healthy manner without the use of chemicals or out-of-control behavior.
  • Intensive Individual Therapy may include:
    •         12-Step Work
    •          Education - Utilizing the "Living in Balance" evidence based curriculum.
    •              And for Sex Addiction, the "Recovery Start Kit" By Dr. Patrick Carnes
    •          Relapse Prevention
    •          Thoughts and Feelings and how they relate to triggers
    •          Triggers and Rituals
    •          More than just "Talk Therapy"
  • Couples Therapy may include:
    •          Developing healthy communication skills
    •          Education
    •          Disclosing secrets
    •          Setting healthy boundaries, etc.
  • Each session will be focused on the goal of providing skills development for sustained recovery.  Recovery skills include:
    •         The ability to tolerate emotional distress
    •         The ability to self-soothe in an appropriate manner
    •         The ability to motivate self
    •         The ability to stop, think and respond and not react
    •         The ability to control impulses
    •         The ability to delay gratification
    •         The ability to ask for help when needed
  • Many therapists can provide the same treatment methods.  However, few, especially those not treating addictions, have an understanding of the goals necessary for sustained recovery and how to achieve them.
